Earlier this spring we had a hummingbird nest in our yard. The two baby birds hatched and were fledged and we thought that was that. Then, if you’ve been following the blog, you know that one of those birds …. or another (we aren’t quite sure) … built a new nest, laid two eggs, and now those eggs have hatched. The newest set of baby hummingbirds is nearing the 1/2 way point before they are fledged and they’ve grown some nice feathers and seem very snug in their little nest. It is 101 degrees out today, so I’m not sure they need to be that snuggled up, but here are the pics nonetheless.

Then, as I was snapping these photos I saw that in the same tree a dove has built a nest. She seemed a bit skitish and I didn’t want to upset her, so I stayed my distance and caught this shot through the branches …

So, spring has sprung and we’ve got quite the avian baby mill going here. Another sign of spring is that the snakes are waking up. Clint was on a hike on Saturday and was alerted by the rattle of what he said was a pretty large rattlesnake sunning itself on a rock just a few inches from him. He (Clint) darted away quickly and resigned himself to the fact that spring hiking in the mountains here has now come to an end for him this year since the snakes are out.

Yet another sign of spring is blooming cactus, succulents, and other plants. Here you can see that one of our aloe plants is putting on a nice springtime display …
