One of the things we really wanted to do while Cully & Terri were here in Vancouver is to have a picnic dinner in Stanley Park. So, we planned that for last Saturday.

The weather was gorgeous early on Saturday. The two of us walked over to the Hotel Sylvia – an ivy covered old brick hotel built along English Bay – for lunch on their outside patio. It was a spectacular day …

As the two of us walked to an art show in the park on Saturday, the weather was very hot and muggy. It was our hottest day here. By the time we walked home, we noticed some big clouds coming over the mountains from the north.

We proceeded to get some fun picnic items, as did Cully & Terri. We met and walked out to a point in Stanley Park where we could look back at the view of the city. But we also had a good view of the threatening clouds rolling in …

And then it started. By “it” I mean the rain and the thunder and lightning. At first we thought it was a bit funny and figured it would pass. We covered up the breads and cheeses, had our wine as we watched lightning off in the distance, and watched other park-goers hide under trees (which we thought was a particularly bad idea during a storm). Then it came down harder and we decided we had better pack up (quickly) and go. We did and then it really started to rain. No time for photos, so you’ll have to use your imagination.

By the time we made it back to our condo, the rain had subsided a bit, but the lightning show was quite intense. Then more rain came and we watched people scurry out of the park as we sat with Cully & Terri in our condo playing cribbage.

Saturday was also another night of the fireworks competition here. That show went on, despite the rain, and we were surprised at how well we could see them from our 10th floor condo.

The day didn’t turn out quite as we had planned, but it was a great day nonetheless.
